Museveni suspends Cabinet, Parliament sittings for NRM verification and election exercise

Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni will oversee the NRM members' verification exercises in Rwakitura and Ntungamano Ireenga, respectively.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has suspended Cabinet and Parliament sittings scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, respectively, to allow members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to participate in grassroots activities.
Museveni issued the directive in a statement on X on Sunday, urging NRM members to avail themselves at their respective constituencies on Tuesday at 10 am for verification and election of the Local Council (LC1) Chairperson flag bearer.

“I am alerting and requesting all the NRM members to go to their respective local areas by 10 am on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to do two things: take part in the baraza that will verify the members of the NRM that have been registered in the NRM registers and take part in the elections of the NRM that have been registered in the NRM registers,” the statement reads in part.
“Take part in the elections of the NRM LCI flag bearer for LCI chairmanship and also elect the village NRM structures.”
The exercise, Museveni added, should strictly take place between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
“There will be no cabinet meeting on Monday, May 5, 2025. I have also agreed with the Rt Hon. Speaker that there will be no parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, May 6, 2025,” said Museveni.
Additionally, Museveni noted that both he and First Lady Janet Museveni will oversee the NRM members' verification exercises in Rwakitura and Ntungamano Ireenga, respectively.
“I will be in the Rwakitura village and Maama will be in Ntungamano Ireenga to take part in the verification of our respective NRM village registers,” he said.
However, Museveni clarified that he will not endorse any specific candidate in the LC1 flag bearer election.
“I will, however, not line behind any candidate for election because as chairman of the NRM, I welcome any choice of our members. I cannot and should not, therefore, take sides.”
